Tunisia eye Herve Renard after 5-1 loss to Sweden: Report

The Eagles of Carthage fired Sabri Lamouchi after a humiliating 5-1 loss.

The Tunisian Football Federation is reportedly close to hiring Hervé Renard, a former Saudi Arabia national football team manager, as their new head coach.

The highly seasoned Frenchman is free after being fired by Saudi Arabia just two months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He had previously considered taking the Ghana position. But the Ghana FA chose Carlos Queiroz instead.

The Tunisian Football Federation fired Sabri Lamouchi on Monday, barely one day after the humiliating defeat, with Mondher Kebaier designated interim coach.

Following the 5-1 defeat to Sweden, national team officials decided that a mid-tournament coaching change was necessary.

Tunisia’s statement after firing Lamouchi

A statement issued the morning following the defeat read:

“The move is towards appointing Mondher Kebaier as the national team coach (on an interim basis) to complete the World Cup matches.

“The Tunisian Football Federation will work to secure a visa for Olympic team coach Anis Boujelbane to join the coaching staff.”

Tunisia are looking to appoint Herve Renard as the next coach

Tunisia’s FA are now working to hire Hervé Renard, who is now anticipated to take over unless there is a last-minute change of plans.

The former Zambia, Cote d’Ivoire, and Morocco coach has apparently been offered the chance to head Tunisia for the remainder of the 2026 World Cup. They are also willing to stick with him for a longer-term project after the event.

Hervé Renard’s appointment would be a stunning return to the FIFA World Cup, coming just months after being fired as Saudi Arabia’s coach before the 2026 competition.

The Frenchman had led Saudi Arabia through qualification but was stripped of his duties before the finals. Therefore, eliminating his initial chances of coaching at the World Cup.

Tunisia are hoping Renard’s experience can reinvigorate their campaign. This comes after a humiliating setback to Sweden, which left them with a difficult task to qualify from Group F.

The North Africans still have two group matches left against Japan and the Netherlands. They must improve rapidly to keep their knockout chances alive.

If the discussions are successful, an official notification will be issued.
