Tunisia eye Herve Renard after 5-1 loss to Sweden: Report

The Eagles of Carthage will be desperate for a win.

After a disastrous tournament debut, Tunisia are in dire need of a response as they come to Estadio BBVA tonight.

Only Curaçao (7–1 versus Germany) lost worse than the 5–1 result. Tunisia suffered the second-heaviest defeat in the first round of games against Sweden. Manager Sabri Lamouchi lost his job following a humiliation in their first World Cup game.

Hervé Renard was quickly hired with the expectation that he would provide new direction and vitality. Renard, who was just hired, must quickly rebuild confidence in a team that has fallen apart. Tunisia have to score as many points as possible against Japan to maintain their chances of qualifying for the knockout round.

During qualifying, Tunisia were a stronghold, but Sweden left them in chaos, which is difficult to fix quickly. Victory is unlikely as long as Japan show up and play their game.

Tunisia starting lineup vs Japan

Tunisia lineup vs. Japan (3-4-2-1): Dahmen (GK); Rekik, Talbi, Bronn; Valery, Skhiri, Mejbri, Abdi; Saad, Tounekti; Slimane

Substitutes: Chamakh, Ben Hessen, Arous, Chikaoui, Neffati, Mahmoud, Ayari, Achouri, Gharbi, Ben Ouanes, Mastouri, Elloumi, Chaouat, Khedira. Achouri, Gharbi

As he gets ready for this historic match, Renard has a totally healthy team. It was anticipated that his first significant choice would be tactical: replacing the three-man defensive system that was so poorly exposed against Sweden with a typical back four.

Abdelmouhib Chamakh, Tunisia’s custodian, was among the victims of the Sweden encounter after making two mistakes that led to goals. Aymen Dahmen, who lost favour following a subpar Africa Cup of Nations two managers ago, is now the natural choice.

Ismaël Gharbi, a former Paris Saint-Germain player, is not added to the starting lineup on the left flank. He stays on the bench. The system they seem to follow will be 3-4-2-1.
