Both nations are set to clash at the World Cup after 24 years.

The Tunisia national football team are set to face Japan in a Group F encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a must-win matchup for both sides at the Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico.

Tunisia will need to make a massive comeback after a disastrous outing in their opening fixture, losing 5-1 to Sweden, the nation’s worst-ever defeat at the World Cup. This ultimately led to manager Sabri Lamouchi being removed from his position, becoming the first manager to be sacked in this year’s edition.

He was replaced by Hervé Renard, famously known for his contribution to African football, becoming the only manager to win two AFCON titles. He was also highly regarded for leading Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup, where they were highly applauded for their performances despite being eliminated in the group stages. His side was the only nation to defeat the eventual champions Argentina, when they achieved a historic 2-1 victory.

Japan, led by Hajime Moriyasu, will arrive with massive expectations after a successful 2022 World Cup campaign. The team defied all odds, making it all the way to the Round of 16, famously topping the infamous “Group of Death” containing Germany and Spain. Japan kicked off the new edition against heavyweights Netherlands, securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw, after coming back twice.

Both nations are set to face each other in a highly anticipated rematch, with their most memorable previous World Cup meeting coming at the 2002 FIFA World Cup group stage. Tunisia, who were desperately in need of a win to keep their World Cup hopes alive, suffered a 2-0 loss against the co-hosts. They were ultimately eliminated, with the two sides now renewing their global rivalry in Mexico.

The match will be hosted at the Monterrey Stadium, and the pitch conditions are now out.

Pitch Report

Preview: Tunisia vs Japan prediction, odds, where to watch, time | FIFA World Cup 2026

The Monterrey Stadium features a newly installed, elite natural grass pitch, made specifically to meet the strict FIFA regulations for the 2026 World Cup. However, the pitch has been heavily criticized due to extreme local weather conditions, presenting a massive risk of severe thermal stress.

Japan even abandoned their pre-World Cup training facility in Monterrey due to poor grass preparation. This will have a huge impact on Japan’s natural game, as it makes it difficult for highly technical Japanese wingers to maintain a high-pressing, vertical transition game, as the dry atmosphere creates immense friction on the ball.

This will be very useful for implementing Tunisia’s game plan, as the African side under Hervé Renard will be able to disrupt Japan’s preferred style of rapid counter-attacking play. The slower, heavier conditions will cause the ball to ultimately lose momentum along the pitch, allowing Tunisia to slow down the game and forcing a physical battle.
