Uganda announce preliminary squad for AFCON 2025

The Cranes are in the same group as Nigeria.
As Uganda get ready for their first TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations participation since 2019, coach Paul Put has chosen a 30-man provisional squad. In accordance with CAF standards, the final group will be reduced to 28 players.
The team left on Sunday for an 11-day training session in Casablanca, Morocco. There, they are scheduled to play two friendly games before the final squad announcement.
Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Tunisia have been assigned to Group C of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025. Put has chosen a mix of up-and-coming players and seasoned foreign players.
One of the four goalkeepers picked is veteran Denis Onyango. Meanwhile, teenage prospect James Bogere receives his first senior call-up following his impressive performances at the U17 World Cup in Qatar.
In-form striker Mato Rogers, who has led the offensive attack with 15 goals in 17 games for FK Vardar this season, provides additional attacking reinforcement.
Baba Alhassan and Melvyn Lorenzen, who performed well in Uganda’s November friendlies, are also returning to the team.
Toby Sibbick of Burton Albion, Jordan Obita, Abdu Azizi Kayondo, and David Owori, the captain of SC Villa, make up the defensive group. Khalid Aucho is in charge of a midfield squad that aims to lead Uganda through a difficult group.
Before sending his final 28-man roster to CAF ahead of the competition, coach Paul Put will have to make two cuts.
