Uruguay started their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia.

One of the most successful teams in World Cup history, Uruguay are looking forward to regaining some part of their retro form. In their opening game of the ongoing FIFA World Cup, they drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia.

Marcelo Bielsa won’t be very happy with his side’s performance. They missed many chances and lacked the creativity one would expect from them. Despite keeping 67 per cent possession and taking 27 shots, La Celeste failed to make any impact in the game.

The only upside for Uruguay in the game was Maxi Araújo’s performance. The 26-year-old scored La Celeste’s only goal of the match while also creating five chances. He also made five accurate crosses while making four recoveries.

However, they still have two huge games waiting in the group stage. Next up, Marcelo Bielsa’s men will face Cape Verde in Miami Gardens, Florida, on Sunday, June 21 (BST).

It remains to be seen if Darwin Nunez gets another chance to lead La Celeste’s attacking front. The former Liverpool attacker struggled against Saudi Arabia, making only eight touches in the first half. In the second half, Bielsa decided to introduce Agustin Canobbio and Juan Manuel Sanabria.

Cape Verde follow a defensive approach. If Uruguay‘s attack failed to prosper at selected moments, they might have to settle for another draw. José María Giménez is also expected to make his return in the starting line-up.

Atletico Madrid defender is recovering from an ankle injury. If he starts, it will be his 100th cap for the national team.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is likely to miss the game due to a muscle tear. He would be available to play for the side in the knockout stage if the team qualifies.

Giorgian de Arrascaeta also missed the game against Saudi Arabia; however, he could potentially return against Cape Verde.
