Uruguay and Saudi Arabia are set to clash in the FIFA World Cup after eight years.

The grandest footballing spectacle has arrived, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup officially underway. Fans worldwide unite for the largest sporting event of the year. Co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, the tournament features a record 48 nations, with all eyeing the ultimate glory.

The Uruguay national football team enter the competition highly motivated to replicate their historic global successes, aided by a modern-attacking squad led by Marcelo Bielsa. They are set to face the Asian side Saudi Arabia in their opening group-stage fixture at Miami Stadium in Florida, USA.

They are set to face off in the World Cup for only the second time, following their 2018 clash. Uruguay narrowly won that one, 1-0.

The nation’s most crucial player for the tournament will undoubtedly be midfielder Federico Valverde. He will be assigned to anchor the team on the pitch, with the Real Madrid superstar considered the vital piece of the squad. He will need to utilise his explosive pace, long-range striking, and relentless work rate to dictate play.

Uruguay are placed in Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, considered a competitive challenge for the South American side. They will compete alongside Saudi Arabia, Spain and Cape Verde to earn a top two spot to qualify directly to the knockout stages.

Who all will be expected to be in the starting lineup?

Uruguay are probably set to feature in a rigid, flat 4-4-2 formation. This is a structure used in their last two pre-World Cup friendlies. The team prioritises physicality and quick transitions to catch their opposition off track

In the defence, the team captain José María Giménez, known for his elite positional awareness, will anchor the backline. He is joined by the experienced Ronald Araújo to create an aerially dominant partnership. Guillermo Varela and Mathías Olivera will operate as fullbacks to complete the defensive line.

The midfield shifts into a four-man shape to minimise central attacking space. Defensive midfielder Manuel Ugarte sits in the middle alongside the versatile Rodrigo Bentancur, functioning as a dual pivot to prevent counterattacks. Maximiliano Araújo secures the left flank, while elite talent Valverde pushes out to the right wing, providing intense pressing options and exceptional runs into the box.

Up front, the team tactics depend on a highly physical, two-striker game plan to hold out defenders. The creative attacker Giorgian de Arrascaeta is pushed higher up the pitch to operate as a secondary forward. He will look to utilise his elite vision to exploit spaces behind the backline.

He forms a partnership with striker Darwin Núñez. He will act as the primary target man responsible for creating spaces in the opposition defence and finishing clinical chances.
