La Celeste face Saudi Arabia in their World Cup opener tonight.
Uruguay will kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a tricky Group H clash against Saudi Arabia in Miami Gardens. The two-time World Cup winners will look to get a positive start to their campaign, hoping to improve upon an embarrassing group-stage exit in Qatar four years earlier.
The South American giants have a talented squad available, despite the departure of their old guard. Led by Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde, La Celeste prepared for the tournament with a couple of draws against England and Algeria in March.
With matches against Cape Verde and Spain to follow, Marcelo Bielsa’s men will know that a win will put them in a favourable spot to progress to the knockouts and even challenge for the top spot.

Let’s look at the Uruguay confirmed lineup for the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Saudi Arabia:

Uruguay (4-4-2): Fernando Muslera; Guillermo Varela, Sebastian Caceres, Mathias Olivera, Matias Vina; Federico Valverde (c), Manuel Ugarte, Rodrigo Bentancur, Maxi Araujo; Federico Vinas, Darwin Nunez.
Substitutes: Santiago Mele (gk), Sergio Rochet (gk), Joaquin Piquerez, Jose Gimenez, Juan Sanabria, Santiago Bueno, Emiliano Martinez, Nicolas de la Cruz, Agustin Canobbio, Brian Ridrogiez, Facundo Pellistri, Rodrigo Aguirre, Rodrigo Zalazar.
Thoughts on the lineup
Fernando Muslera has been a faithful servant to his nation for many years. The Estudiantes goalkeeper, now 39, will be appearing in his sixth World Cup and will join Edinson Cavani as the most-capped players for their nation at the World Cup (17 appearances).
Bielsa has a few injuries to contend with. Ronald Araujo and Jose Maria Gimenez are out of the opener with muscle and ankle injuries, respectively. This means Sebastian Caceres and Napoli’s Mathias Olivera will slot in at centre-back. Former Manchester United youngster Guillermo Varela starts at right-back, joined by Matias Vina on the left.
With Giorgian De Arrascaeta out with a broken collarbone, the head coach opted for a flat 4-4-2 formation. Rodrigo Bentancur and Manuel Ugarte, despite coming off poor domestic seasons in the Premier League, start in the middle of the park. Valverde starts on the right flank. Sporting CP’s Maxi Araújo, usually a full-back, starts on the left wing.
Al-Hilal forward Darwin Nunez, who had 14 goal contributions last season, starts alongside Federico Vinas in a two-man attack.
