Uruguay and Spain last faced each other in 2013.

Uruguay are preparing to face their biggest challenge of the FIFA World Cup, as they will take on Spain in their final group stage game on June 26 at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, Mexico. La Celeste entered the tournament with high expectations, but the team has failed to live up to them.

Drawn in Group I, they started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia. The Green Falcons took an early lead over Marcelo Bielsa’s side; however, Maxi Araújo later equalised, helping La Celeste avoid defeat in their opening fixture.

They entered their second match at the summer competition in dire need of a win. However, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Cape Verde. As a result, their final group stage game against Spain has become of the utmost importance.

A loss will end La Celeste’s hope of reaching the knockout round, while a draw will keep them in contention. Nevertheless, a win will lead them straight into the last 32 of the ongoing summer competition.

Thoughts on the lineup

Marcelo Bielsa trusts Darwin Núñez more than Federico Viñas as the primary striker option. Agustín Canobbio, Federico Valverde, and Maximiliano Araújo will play in the second line of offence and will also create chances.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Manuel Ugarte are crucial to the side, as they will need to control the tempo and remain tactically aware. Mathías Olivera and Martín Cáceres will play as the central defenders, while Guillermo Varela and Juan Manuel Sanabria will play on the flanks. Fernando Muslera will keep the gloves.
