The Blue Sharks are still unbeaten in the mega competition.

The Uruguay national football team faced the Cabo Verde national football team in their second group stage outing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The clash took place at the Miami Stadium.

After putting in all their efforts, Marcelo Bielsa’s men were held to a 2-2 draw by the debutants, Cape Verde. The two-time world champions have many top players from top leagues around the world and despite that, they failed to secure a win against the Blue Sharks.

The Bubista-led team came up with another top performance. After holding the European champions to a goalless draw, Cabo Verde put in a top effort against La Celeste to secure another point in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Five important things we learned from this match:

1. First World Cup goal by Cape Verde

The Cape Verde national football team are competing in their maiden FIFA World Cup. In their second game, they have scored two goals in the flagship tournament. Kevin Pina scored a sensational free-kick in the 21st minute and then Helio Varela tapped in an important equaliser for the debutants. This is a historic milestone for the players and, of course, the nation.

2. Uruguay’s vulnerable defence

La Celeste made many mistakes during their recent fixture. They continued to give away the ball to Cape Verde and in the end, they conceded two goals, securing one more draw. The Uruguay national football team still have a chance to get to the next stage of the tournament, but it is going to be a very difficult outing for them against the Spaniards.

3. Late wastefulness costs Uruguay

Despite attempting 16 shots on goal, only two of them were on target. A goal by Maximiliano Araujo in the 44th minute and by Agustin Canobbio in the final moments of the first half. Federico Viñas started as the lone striker and was unable to generate a goal. Later, Darwin Nunez came in and it was a similar sort of story for La Celeste. Even though Nunez created a chance, captain Federico Valverde failed to tap the ball in.

4. Blue Sharks are coming for more

With their last group stage fixture remaining, the Cape Verde national football team will be battling to secure a spot in the round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Their performance against Uruguay showed that they are capable of much more and despite lacking quality players in their squad, they can come up with a strong fight against top nations from around the world.

5. Group H reaches boiling point

Even after playing two matches each, no country from Group H have secured a round of 32 spot yet. Even Spain are yet to get to the next stage of the flagship tournament this year. With their win against Saudi Arabia, La Roja are now the closest to qualifying. Uruguay and Cabo Verde both have a chance to make it to the next stage, but who will it be?
