The Swedish striker has been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Viktor Gyokeres fueled transfer rumours by hailing former Manchester United players Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo as his heroes.

The Swedish striker has scored 25 goals in just 22 games this season, demonstrating his incredible form for Sporting CP. The 25-year-old striker has apparently been uneasy due to Sporting’s difficulties since head coach Ruben Amorim left for Old Trafford, despite his effect on the field. He is now considering his options, with a summer transfer seeming more and more plausible.

The transfer dynamics have changed in Manchester United‘s favour since Amorim joined the team. In recent weeks, Gyokeres’ ties to United have become more solid. Furthermore, the Swede’s respect for Ibrahimovic and Ronaldo and his ambition to follow in their footsteps give the transfer story a fascinating turn.

In a talk with UEFA prior to Sporting’s Champions League matchup with Club Brugge, Gyökeres shared his football-related inspirations.

“The players who inspire me are Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Cristiano Ronaldo,” he said. “Because of the way they behave on the pitch. They went above and beyond what was expected, that’s what impressed me. I want to do similar things on the pitch. in today’s football, you need to be physically strong, have the talent to score goals, communicate and combine well with other teammates. My three best qualities are my physicality, my finishing and often being in the right place to score.”

Two of football’s best goal scorers, Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic, have left a lasting impression at United and elsewhere. In 346 games during two stints with the Red Devils, the Portuguese scored an incredible 145 goals.

In contrast, Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals in his first season, helping United win both the League Cup and the Europa League. Gyokeres looks up to these two legends, which is not surprising given how many young players have been motivated by their accomplishments.

Sporting CP will surely try to hold onto their top striker past 2025, but it might be challenging given their dismal play and management turmoil. United will travel to Viktoria Plezn on Thursday for a Europa League match before facing bitter rivals Manchester City in the derby on Sunday.
