Pep Guardiola has been managing Man City since 2016.

Before Bayern Munich hired Vincent Kompany as their new coach in 2024, club administrators consulted with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who persuaded them to choose the former Belgium international.

As Bayern executive board member Uli Hoeneß recently disclosed, Guardiola even claimed he trusts Kompany to be his eventual successor at Manchester City.

However, this time the former City centre-back was questioned if he ever thought of taking Pep Guardiola’s place at Manchester City, where he established himself as one of the legendary players.

Vincent Kompany was questioned about this at a press conference on Tuesday. The Bayern coach emphasised he doesn’t want to look way too far ahead.

“In football you can never think too far ahead. I’m 100% focused on what we can achieve with Bayern – I just want to live in the present. I have zero thoughts on other stuff.”

Currently, the major focus for Kompany is Wednesday’s DFB-Pokal round of 16 meeting against 1. FC Union Berlin, with whom Bayern drew 2-2 after grabbing a late equaliser in the Bundesliga on November 8.

Although Bayern have been playing well this season, they have had a few setbacks, beginning last month with a Bundesliga tie against Union Berlin.

They lost for the first time last week, to Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League. Meanwhile, they still lead the domestic table by eight points after defeating FC St. Pauli 3-1 on Saturday.

However, Luis Díaz and Nicolas Jackson both had scored in injury time, forcing them to rely on late goals once more. Bayern haven’t won the DFB Pokal since 2020, and Kompany wants to break that streak. The winners of Wednesday go to the quarterfinals.
