Both are trying to get on with each other despite what seemed to be a sour start in their relationship.

During Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Alavés on Sunday, winger Vinicius Jr. made a blatant effort to dispel rumours of a strained relationship with manager Xabi Alonso.

Alonso’s friendship with Vinicius has been one of his numerous problems this season. The Brazilian’s enraged response to his substitution during El Clásico back in October sparked a flood of debate and conjecture that nearly cost Alonso his job.

A hug seemingly resolved the chaos in Real Madrid

Although a powerful message was sent two months ago, Sunday’s victory over Alavés seemed to make an equally powerful statement. Vinicius, who made the assist, rejoiced with Alonso in the wild celebrations that followed Rodrygo’s game-winning goal.

Following his teammates’ applause, Vinicius rushed to the Madrid bench to give Alonso a hug in celebration of a goal that might have kept Alonso employed for a few more days.

Vinicius Jr. was taken off again near the end of the game, but this time there were no tensions. Rather, the manager and player gave each other another hug while Alonso consoled the winger over a penalty call that they both thought should have gone to him. When it counted most, the two seemed to agree.

Xabi Alonso’s chances of staying as Madrid manager are believed to have depended heavily on the team’s victory versus Alavés. He is benefiting from the dressing room’s increasing camaraderie and support, which was clearly lacking earlier in the season.

Alonso maintained that the Madrid team’s growing camaraderie in the midst of hardship was evident against Alavés.

“We’re all together, we’re fighting together in the good moments and not so good moments,” Alonso reflected postmatch. “The team fought well. The start was very good, and we were able to go ahead again at the end. Unity is fundamental.“

“We’re very focused on doing our thing. We’re together, preparing for a game every three days. The lads deserve a lot of credit for the win. We had a lot of absentees, [defender Victor] Valdepeñas had his debut.“

What happened between Xabi Alonso & Vinicius Jr.?

The pair seem to have moved on, despite the previous weeks, when their relationship seemingly deteriorated.

Will Alonso still be sacked by the club?

If Madrid continue to deliver poor results, he could be sacked.

What was the result of the last match?

Alaves 1-2 Real.
