Virgil van Dijk joined Celtic in 2013 after starting his professional career with Groningen. In both of his campaigns with Celtic, he was named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year, claimed the Scottish Premiership, and took home the Scottish League Cup.
Virgil van Dijk joined Southampton in 2015 before joining Liverpool in January 2018 for £75 million, which at the time was the highest transfer fee ever paid for a defender.
Virgil van Dijk played in both the 2018 and 2019 UEFA Champions League finals while playing for Liverpool. In his first full season, he earned the titles of Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Players’ Player of the Year.
In addition to helping the team end its 30-year league title drought by claiming the 2019–20 Premier League, Van Dijk went on to win the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. In 2019, he finished second in the Ballon d’Or and Best FIFA Men’s Player competitions, and he is the only defender to win the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year prize.
