[WATCH] Mahitosh Roy’s world-class goal against Bengaluru FC in Durand Cup 2024
The Black Panthers midfielder’s stunner wasn’t enough to level the proceedings with the Blues.
Mohammedan SC were overpowered in a 2-3 defeat at the hands of a rampant Bengaluru FC side at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in the Durand Cup on Tuesday. Mahitosh Roy’s spectacular goal couldn’t turn the tide as Gerard Zaragoza’s robust side picked up their third win on the bounce after fielding yet another changed lineup.
Bengaluru’s new left-back Mohammed Salah notched his first assist as he set up Aleksandar Jovanovic to score with a header from a corner kick in just six minutes. 15 minutes later, Dipu Haldar’s desperate attempt to obstruct Jorge Pereyra Diaz’s shot from trickling in saw him turn it into his own net.
After going into the dugouts with a 2-0 lead at halftime, the Black Panthers were back to conceding pressure once action resumed. Edgar Mendez, Diaz and the Blues’ wide midfield were tearing Hakim Ssengendo’s boys apart.
Vinith Venkatesh gave Zaragoza’s men an unassailable lead at the hour mark with a left-footed curler that Mohameddan shot-stopper Subhajit Bhattacharjee could only watch as it bundled in the top corner. The Black Panthers, however, refused to give up as Israfil Dewan glanced a header off Alban Koli’s cross into the Bengaluru goal.
With the score at 3-1, Ssengendo’s men had newfound courage but all that disappeared as Subhajit brought down Diaz at the edge of the Mohammedan box and was sent off. Dipu Haldar made amends this time, by donning the gloves and saving Chhetri’s freekick.
However, it was deep in stoppage time that Mahitosh Roy decided to pull a worldie out of his locker. The former East Bengal midfielder locked his ankles and launched a 40-yard rocket that made light work of Bengaluru’s goalkeeper as it went into the top corner.
Neither fans nor staff could believe the goal as he was congratulated by his teammate. Unfortunately, the strike came too late as Zaragoza’s men had already grinded out a narrow 3-2 victory. The match ended in Bengaluru FC’s favour, but it was surely Mahitosh’s screamer that stole hearts.
