The German manager will start his reign as Three Lions coach in January.

After Gareth Southgate decided to step down as England coach following the Three Lions 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024, the FA started looking for a replacement. In the meantime, they gave an interim position to U21 England coach Lee Carsley.

With many high-profile managers such as Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino linked with England’s job the FA decided to go with former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel.

However, Tuchel’s appointment has seen mixed feedback from the fans and pundits alike, but have the FA made an excellent decision or is it going to be a gamble?

It will be too soon to judge as Tuchel will start his England reign in January and until then Carlsey will oversee another two UEFA Nations League matches in November.

Thomas Tuchel as England manager?

Tuchel is certainly one of the best managers in Europe and his time with Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are testament to it. However, there will be issues too as sometimes the former Blues head coach is adamant with his style of play.

Tuchel usually prefers a back three with full-backs playing as wings-back, but he does make changes when his method doesn’t work. He will have many options at his disposal given the richness of England’s squad.

Tuchel will be reunited with many players he has managed at club level and hence a few of them will easily adapt to his style. He will certainly be under pressure to win trophies given how England have been starved of silverware.

Tuchel is also the first England manager to have won a major trophy in one of Europe’s top leagues, or a European trophy, since their last foreign coach – Fabio Capello, who was appointed 17 years ago.

He is a daring manager and knows how to get the results out, we have witnessed during his time at Chelsea how he led them to the Champions League trophy in a short time, while at Bayern he won the Bundesliga and in the second season he led them to the semi-final of Champions League.

Tuchel also builds a good rapport with players and if he doesn’t like the players he desires then they won’t be picked up for the England squad.

“Tuchel can be incredibly charming and diplomatic, and can be entertaining and humorous,” German football journalist Raphael Honigstein told BBC 5 Live. “At the same time, he can be a little bit harsh about his players and that doesn’t always go down well.”

French journalist Laurens said: “His man management is getting better. With Paris and all the superstars and egos, he had to change a bit rather than being this alpha male he was in Germany.”

Will England play exciting football?

Tuchel style of play can be different depending on the players he has. During Southgate eight-year stint as Three Lions coach was lacked trophies and he was also criticised often for his negative tactics.

But that does not mean that under Tuchel’s England will start firing cylinders. In his 578 games at club level, his sides have scored 147 goals and conceded 619 – an average of roughly 2-1 per game.

Honigstein said: “He has a talent for finding solutions. He’s become slightly more conservative in recent years.”

However, his most positive aspect of style is that England will be able to keep the ball. Only Pep Guardiola’s side Manchester City have averaged the most possessions or more successful passes, than Tuchel’s 62% at Chelsea.

England fans should be excited about what Tuchel will bring to the table as he is certainly one of the most underrated managers and one of the best things about him he gets results quickly.
