What If? Tottenham Hotspur get relegated?

Spurs are fighting to avoid getting relegated this season.

Given Tottenham Hotspur’s enormous resources, it should be nearly impossible for one of the six richest teams in the Premier League to be demoted to the EFL Championship.

However, Tottenham Hotspur are only one point ahead of 18th-place West Ham with nine games remaining. They are in a terrible run of form. It makes it hard to predict where they will get enough points for survival.

Spurs are by no means the favourites for the drop, with Wolves and Burnley most likely to finish in the bottom two spots at the conclusion of the season. Teams like the Hammers, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United are also in danger.

How will Tottenham suffer financially if they are relegated?

The statistics show that the Spurs lost £129 million last season. They could lose considerably more money in the future if they are demoted.

However, dropping to the EFL Championship would cut Spurs’ costs in certain ways. For instance, it has been widely reported that their players’ contracts have a clause that reduces their salary by 50% in the event of relegation.

The record pay expenditure of £276 million from the previous season might be reduced to just £138 million if that clause is included in each player’s contract.

However, outgoings would stay the same and might even increase in a number of other ways.

Rising operating costs, which include things like utilities, transportation, insurance, marketing, and administration, are one of the biggest financial problems clubs on the continent have been dealing with lately.

Additionally, Tottenham Hotspur had 877 full-time workers last year, up 57 from the year before, making them the 12th largest staffed club in Europe. Tottenham Hotspur will have to continue paying top-tier European salaries even if they don’t compete in the English top flight, barring a cull of that personnel.

Which players are likely to leave if Spurs get relegated?

If Tottenham Hotspur were to be relegated, most of their first-team players should have no trouble drawing interest from the Premier League and throughout Europe.

With a nucleus of seasoned internationals in their prime who are unlikely to want to spend a season in the Championship, the defence—possibly the strongest part of the field in the first half of this season under the recently fired Thomas Frank—would be essentially picked clean. Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, Destiny Udogie, Micky van de Ven, and Cristian Romero would all need to be replaced. Djed Spence and Kevin Danso will probably draw a lot of attention as well, and they might end up on loan or permanently at elite teams.

In terms of midfield, Conor Gallagher, who signed in January, was courted by Aston Villa before choosing to join Tottenham Hotspur. He will undoubtedly want to keep playing at the top level.

Prior to having hamstring surgery in January, Rodrigo Bentancur was a key member of Frank’s team and pledged his long-term future to the north London club in October. However, if Spurs are demoted, he might look to go.

It’s hard to imagine forward players like Dominic Solanke, Mohammed Kudus, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Xavi Simons, or Richarlison playing in England’s second division for a season or more throughout their prime.

Where do Tottenham Hotspur stand in the table?

They are in 16th position in the table.

What will happen if Tottenham Hotspur are relegated?

They will suffer huge financial loss and lose key players.
