What injury did Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr suffered against Villarreal in LaLiga?

The Brazilian is likely to miss the Selecao’s October international break matches.
Real Madrid confirmed Dani Carvajal’s severe ACL injury on Sunday. They also revealed that Vinicius Junior had a neck injury during their 2-0 victory over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu. In the morning, the Brazilian was examined by doctors after Carlo Ancelotti verified that he was suffering from neck pain.
On Vinicius, the club added: “Following tests carried out on Vinicius Junior, the player has been diagnosed with a cervical injury. His progress will be monitored.”
Manager Carlo Ancelotti also said after the match: “Vinicius Jr is in pain and will undergo tests in the next hours. His neck is blocked, he has suffered a problem and that’s something we need to check with the medical staff”.
Real Madrid have announced that the forward will require time off in order to fully heal from the injury. Thus it is unlikely that he will participate in Brazil’s games during the forthcoming international break.
Second-place Madrid will play their next LaLiga match against ninth-place Celta Vigo on October 19 after the October international break. Carvajal won’t be back for several months, and it’s unclear if Vinicius will be ready for that game.
In spite of the injury, Vinicius Jr., who is predicted to win the Ballon d’Or this month, scored in Saturday’s match against Villarreal to give Los Blancos the victory and move them in equal points with first place Barcelona. Barca are still ahead due to a better goal difference.
With four goals and seven assists in 12 games across all competitions, Vinicius has been in excellent form for Real Madrid during the 2024–25 season.
He has been impressive for the Los Blancos this season. In his absence, Kylian Mbappe will have to step up, while Ancelotti might once again switch to the diamond formation.
However, it seems certain that Vinicius will make a comeback for Los Blancos’ in their crucial Champions League and LaLiga matches against Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona respectively at the end of the month.
