City’s next season’s league schedule has arrived.

On the first weekend of the 2025–2026 season, Manchester City will take on Wolves in an attempt to win another Premier League championship.

Since the competition’s rebranding in 1992, they have claimed the title eight times, bringing their total top-flight total to ten. The upcoming domestic season will be their 29th since then.

Here, we examine their opening day performance before the most recent Premier League season.

Manchester City’s opening day Premier League record

City have a 57% victory percentage after winning 16 of their first 28 Premier League season games.

Their first was in August 2003, when they defeated Charlton Athletic 3-0 in the Valley. Goals from Sun Jihai, Antoine Siberski, and Nicolas Anelka gave them three points.

With an average of 1.79 goals per game, the Blues have scored 50 goals overall in matchday one games. Of their 28 entertaining games, they have suffered six defeats, drawn six, and given up just 26 goals.

Their biggest win

In 2019, they decisively defeated West Ham 5-0 at the London Stadium in their biggest victory on the opening weekend of a Premier League season. Gabriel Jesus scored the lone goal in the first half in the 25th minute.

Raheem Sterling scored in minute 51 and then secured a brace 25 minutes later to increase their lead. They maintained the momentum past the half.

Before the England international finished his hat-trick in stoppage time, Sergio Aguero’s late penalty gave them the fourth goal of the afternoon.

Goal-galore game

City’s victory over West Ham in 2019 is one of just two winning games to have five goals after their 3-2 victory against Southampton in 2012.

However, the most exhilarating opening day event occurred after a heartbreaking 4-2 loss to Aston Villa in August 2008.

John Carew gave the home team the lead after the first half ended in a draw, but with just over twenty-five minutes left, Elano’s penalty gave Mark Hughes’ team the equaliser.

Vedran Corluka’s late goal was merely a consolation, though, as the Villans had a significant advantage thanks to a hat-trick from Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Highest scorer for Manchester City in first weekend of the new season

In the first Premier League games of the season, club hero Sergio Aguero has contributed more goals for City than any other player.

He is their record goalscorer, scoring seven goals on the weekend, including the first two in his debut for the Sky Blue, as they defeated Swansea 4-0.

Erling Haaland comes next with five goals in three matches after braces against West Ham and Burnley in 220/23 and 2023/24, respectively, before the last season opener at Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola’s opening day record in the league

Under Pep Guardiola’s leadership, City have had a stellar start to the season, winning eight of their nine games early in the Catalan’s tenure.

They have averaged 2.3 goals per first Premier League game during those assignments, scoring 21 goals and giving up only three goals.

The first triumph was a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, where they got off to the ideal start to the manager’s legendary reign as City’s manager, thanks to a penalty kick from Aguero and an own goal from Paddy McNair.

They then won the second of their record four consecutive men’s top-flight titles, with their lone loss occurring in a close 1-0 away defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the beginning of 2021–2022.
