The Argentina will be looking to add another trophy to his already impressive cabinet this summer

With the 2024 Copa America in touching distance now, Argentina are set to lock horns with debutant Canada in the tournament curtain-raiser at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

The 2022 World Cup winners are the frontrunners once again to win the tournament, as they look to build on their incredible run during international tournaments over the last few years. Argentina, under coach Lionel Scaloni, has proven to be a fierce opposition that can overcome any setback to win it all in the end.

Newbies Canada will look to make the most of their inaugural campaign in such a massive tournament by giving juggernauts Argentina a run for their money. However, with the star-studded roster of La Albiceleste and their generational messiah, Lionel Messi, at the helm, anything but a win for Argentina would prove to be a major shock.

One of the greatest players of all time, Lionel Messi, would want to lift his second Copa America trophy as captain after winning his first in the last edition. In this competition, he holds the record for the joint-most appearances alongside Chilean legend Sergio Livingstone with 34.

Messi has won the Player of the Tournament award on two separate occasions, once in 2015, when they lost the final on penalties to Chile, and another in 2021, when he finally managed to win his first major trophy with Argentina. Lionel Messi is also currently tied for 7th all-time with 13 goals (shared with Norberto Mendez of Argentina and Zizinho of Brazil) as he looks to climb the ranks in the 2024 Copa America.

Surprisingly enough, Lionel Messi has never managed to finish the tournament as the solo top scorer until now. His best record to date has been when he won the top scorer award alongside Colombian winger Luis Diaz in the 2021 Copa America (both with four goals). Along with winning the Copa America again, Messi would also look to add this undone achievement as a part of his summer bucket list.

Even in the twilight of his career, Lionel Messi is still the best player for Argentina, as he looks to lead this talented and experienced squad to yet another international glory. Argentina is placed in Group A alongside the likes of Canada, Chile, and Peru.
