El Tri beat USA 2-1 to clinch the Gold Cup title.
Mexico won the country’s 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup championship on Sunday after defeating the U.S. Men’s National Team 2-1.
Despite being behind in the game, Javier Aguirre’s side dug deep and came from behind to hand the USA a 2-1 defeat and clinch their 10th trophy.
The first kickoff in front of almost 70,000 spectators at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, demonstrated the intensity of the event.
Just four minutes into the game, Chris Richards gave the USA the lead with a spectacular header that bounced in off the crossbar on a set-piece free kick from Sebastian Berhalter, seemingly taking the opposition by surprise.
Following the USMNT’s quick start, El Tri took over and controlled for extended periods of the first half, having almost twice as much time in possession as the Americans and finally found the back of the net through Raúl Jiménez.
The El Tri continued their onslaught and deservingly scored their second goal in the 77th minute through a set-piece when Edson Álvarez headed the ball into the corner of the USA goal to give El Tri a 2-1 lead.
But now their focus will shift to another major competition next year when they co-host the FIFA World Cup, and they will be hoping to demonstrate their credentials in the tournament as one of the underdogs.
What is Mexico’s next official match after winning the 2025 Gold Cup?
A win in the Gold Cup has indicated their overwhelming dominance in the competition, as they are the only nation to win the most times (10) and additionally defended the event, after previously winning it in 2023.
The 2026 World Cup opening at Estadio Azteca will be Mexico’s next official tournament match following their 2025 Gold Cup victory.
Now they will celebrate their massive victory and prepare for the upcoming World Cup next summer, as they are one of the co-hosts who will play their next official match at the World Cup 2026.
However, before their official game in the World Cup next, the North Americans will get to prepare for the major tournament as one of the co-hosts and will play friendlies against Japan and South Korea.
