The Argentine superstar suffered an ankle injury in the Copa America final.
Lionel Messi is set to be on the sidelines for a few weeks after he suffered an ankle ligament injury in Argentina’s 1-0 win against Colombia in the Copa America final. Messi’s cameo ended way sooner after the forward couldn’t continue due to the pain in his ankle and had to be limped off.
Messi, who only managed one goal and one assist during the campaign, had a disappointing tournament overall after struggling to have a meaningful mark at the biggest stage.
However, the injury isn’t serious and the former Barcelona won’t be needing surgery but certainly will take months to recover so we don’t expect the eight-time Ballon d’Or to return any time sooner on the pitch again.
Messi has taken America’s football to new heights ever since he arrived in Miami with many fans flocking to the stadium to witness one of the greatest players of all time. Since he joined Inter Miami he has already led them to trophy and they are currently top of the table.
But for now, fans will have to get used to watching Miami’s game without Messi who will now hope to recover quickly and get back on the pitch.
When will Lionel Messi return?
Messi’s ligament injury depends on the severity of it. if it’s grade A then he will miss eight to 10 days but when it’s grade B which is moderate he will be on the sidelines for 10 to 30 days. But if it is grade C which is described as severe then Messi will miss up to 30 to 90 days or more to recover.
The latter Grade needs surgery which is unlikely after Inter Miami confirmed that he will miss their two matches. Messi’s return remains doubtful it will depend on the speed of his recovery and even if he recuperates it will take him some time to regain full fitness which means we don’t expect him to return on the pitch anytime soon.
However, Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino confirmed that Messi could return on August 3 for the Tigres UANL in a Leagues Cup match, but nothing is uncertain of his return and his injury will be assessed week-to-week basis.
