Any team that plays in the top four divisions of the English football league system (a total of 92 clubs)—the Premier League at the top and the three divisions of the English Football League’s own league competition (Championship, League One, and League Two)—is eligible to participate in this the competition, which is run by the English Football League (EFL).
First played as the Football League Cup in 1960–61, it is one of the three top-tier domestic football competitions in England, together with the Premier League and FA Cup, and one of the two main domestic knockout cups in English football.
