The English top-flight football returns this weekend.

England’s premier professional football league is the Premier League, often known as the English Premier League (EPL). The league, which began in 1992, lasts from August to May every season. The 2025–2026 season will be televised and streamed live in India, like many others in the past.

It has 380 games in a season. The 20 teams in the league play each other twice, once at home and once away. Thus, each club participate in 38 games.

A win earns three points, while a draw earns one. No points are awarded for a loss. The league trophy is lifted by the team with the most points at the end of the season.

The three clubs that finish last in the league rankings at the end of the season are demoted to the English football league’s second division, the EFL Championship. Meanwhile, the Championship’s top two teams, along with the playoff winner between teams from third to sixth place, advance to the Premier League.

The UEFA Champions League is also open to the top four/five Premier League teams. The top four teams advance straight to the league phase. The European Performance Spot allows more teams to qualify further.

With 20 league titles each, Manchester United and Liverpool are the league’s two most successful teams. Furthermore, Manchester City have ten titles, whereas Arsenal have thirteen.

Last season, Liverpool interrupted Manchester City’s hopeful fourth league title-winning streak by becoming the reigning champions.

The 2025-26 EPL campaign will span from August 15, 2025, to May 24, 2026.

Where and how to watch the Premier League in India?

In India, the Star Sports Select HD 1 TV station will broadcast live league games. Moreover, the Premier League will be streamed live on JioHotstar (previously called Disney+Hotstar). The service requires a subscription and is not free.
