Where would Bryan Mbeumo fit in Manchester United system?

The Red Devils are pushing to sign the Cameroon international.

Last season, Manchester United struggled to score goals, but they are committed to making amends. They are now pursuing Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford after spending £62.5 million on Brazilian attacker Matheus Cunha.

They returned with an offer worth over £60 million after their £45 million proposal was turned down earlier in June. What would the Cameroonian forward bring to Old Trafford if they can close a deal? We examine.

Last season, Bryan Mbeumo produced 20 goals for Brentford, all of which were league goals. The only players with more Premier League goals were Erling Haaland of Manchester City, Alexander Isak of Newcastle United, and Mohamed Salah of Liverpool.

It also marked the 25-year-old’s first time reaching double figures for a team in the top tier. Previously, he had scored 16 goals for Brentford in the EFL Championship in 2019–20 and 11 goals overall for Ligue 2’s Troyes in 2018–19.

In his initial three Premier League seasons, Cameroon had a fairly average tally of eight, nine, and nine goals (in all competitions).

Will Bryan Mbeumo provide that firepower in attack for Man Utd?

However, the Cameroon international is being purchased to serve more than just simple objectives. Although Cunha is anticipated to play on the left, Bryan Mbeumo prefers to play on the right behind a striker, but he can also play centrally.

He is among the league’s top ball holders, frequently delivering an impactful end product, and leads the group of players with more than 15 goals in terms of touches per 90 minutes, demonstrating his engagement in the game.

With seven assists, he was 17th on the list of top assisters, but with 9.3 xA, he led the Premier League in predicted assists.

He would therefore have anticipated that his teammates would score more of his passes than they really did. Salah only got an xA of 9.1 despite having 18 assists.

He departs a squad where he was not under pressure to score every goal, as his teammate Yoane Wissa scored 19 goals in the Premier League. He will join a club where Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo, the Red Devils’ leading league scorers, each scored eight goals.

Last season, Amorim talked a lot about how United didn’t take advantage of their chances. They must score a lot more than the meagre 44 league goals they scored the previous season.

Although Mbeumo’s arrival could help fill that void, the Cameroon forward will provide more than that, much like Cunha did.

He can move the ball ahead because of his strength and power. United’s offensive players are far too often of the snappy type, who perform better in cramped areas.

The idea is that Bryan Mbeumo, Cunha, and a powerful number nine who can hold the ball up and play with his back to goal can push the opposition back, giving Man United more space to play in, increasing the game’s depth, and creating more possibilities.

By bringing in players who are accustomed to the Premier League and don’t need settling-in time—which is scarce given how the previous season ended—United are attempting to make up for the mistakes made in their previous recruitment strategy.

Amorim stated at the end of the previous season that it could require a few transfer windows to get what he wants; thus, Bryan Mbeumo cannot be the end of the team’s reshaping.

However, it seems that United will pose a greater threat to goals in the upcoming season, and that ought to result in a notable improvement.
