Chelsea are set to give Liverpool a guard of honour before the game.
Liverpool have received four guards of honour, which is a revered tradition in Premier League football. With their recent Premier League title win, they will receive their fifth in their next match.
Liverpool have gained the respect and admiration of their opponents by winning the league with four games remaining this season.
Before the game begins, Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca wants his team to honour the champions after they won the league.
Which club has given the most guard of honour in Premier League history?
When a team plays a game after winning the Premier League, there is an unofficial ritual known as a guard of honour. Between two parallel lines of opposing players who stand and cheer, the players of the victorious team enter the pitch. Whether the champions are playing at home or away, they can still be honoured.
It’s interesting to note that Chelsea have awarded more guards of honour than any other Premier League side. In the past, the Blues participated in the gesture for Manchester City (2020 and 2023), Leicester (2016), and Manchester United (2007).
Now they are set to honour the Reds before the kick-off. Liverpool won their 20th English top-flight title in their history under the new head coach, Arne Slot, this term, with a few matches to spare.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have continued to go through tremendous changes over the past years. They are currently fifth in the Premier League and are fighting to secure a UEFA Champions League spot.
Maresca stated before this weekend’s match that there is still a big difference between Chelsea and the quality of the champions, Liverpool, but he thinks his team is headed in the right direction.
“In terms of the gap between Liverpool and Chelsea, it’s there and you can see this clearly,” the Italian coach said. ”My feeling is we are moving in the right direction and hopefully this gap can be smaller and smaller.”
