The Red Devils finally decided to part ways with Ruben Amorim.
Following Sunday’s 1-1 draw between Manchester United and Leeds United, Ruben Amorim made a point of emphasising that he joined the team to serve as manager rather than head coach.
Less than a day later, he’s neither a coach nor a manager after being fired. This dismissal comes 14 months after taking over due to discontent both on and off the field.
With United in sixth place in the Premier League, former midfielder Darren Fletcher will temporarily take control as the Red Devils begin over.
It will be extremely difficult for whoever the club choose to be their next permanent manager to get them back to their previous level of success. Who could that be? Let’s review the riders and runners.
Enzo Maresca was considered to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City before he departed from Chelsea last week. For the former Blues manager, though, may it be the crimson side of the city?
Enzo Maresca & Gareth Southgate emerge as favourites

Old Trafford won’t be a culture shock because Maresca has the reputation and intelligence to handle the position. Afterall he has dealt with the madhouse at Stamford Bridge.
But after being sufficiently chastised by Amorim’s semi-regular public pronouncements, does the hierarchy want another outspoken agitator in Maresca? However, his connections to Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox from their time at City might allay those concerns.
Gareth Southgate, who initially seems like a nice fit, is the second favourite. Zigzagging from a tactical zealot in Amorim to the ultimate pragmatist in the former England manager makes some sense for a team in dire need of stability and advancement.
It’s unclear if the former defender has the tactical skills necessary to succeed in a league that features managers like Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola. Moreover, the club’s supporters would be sceptical of his hiring.
Oliver Glasner, the manager of Crystal Palace, looks unrealistic. The Austrian has done a fantastic job leading Palace into Europe after winning the FA Cup the previous season. But the Eagles are winless in seven games, so taking over at Old Trafford in the middle of the season seems improbable.
