Who is Álex Baena? Spain attacker who scored vs Uruguay in FIFA World Cup 2026

Álex Baena now has a FIFA World Cup goal to his name.

Spain are currently playing against Uruguay at the Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, Mexico, in their final group stage game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The first half of the game was filled with both teams pressing each other high but unable to find a way out.

However, Alex Baena managed to find a small gap and give La Roja a lead in the first half, courtesy of an assist from Marcos Llorente. The 24-year-old was playing his second match for Spain in the FIFA World Cup, where he scored his maiden goal.

As a match continues, the young Spanish attacker would certainly look forward to scoring more.

Álex Baena was born on July 20, 2001, in Roquetas de Mar, Spain. He started his youth career at CD Roquetas, where he played from 2007 to 2011. Baena also played for Villarreal CF’s academy for nearly eight years before finally making his senior debut in 2018.

He played for all the youth teams of Villarreal before making his first-team debut in 2020. Álex Baena made 148 appearances for El Submarino Amarillo across competitions in five different seasons, scoring 26 goals and providing 40 assists.

He also spent a season on loan with Girona (2021-22). However, last year in July, the Spanish attacker joined LaLiga giants Atletico Madrid on a five-year contract. He primarily played as a substitute for Atletico in his maiden season. In 46 appearances for the side, he has two goals and three assists.

Baena, who caught the limelight after scoring against Uruguay, also scored in the final of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

He earned his first call-up to La Roja’s senior team under head coach Luis de la Fuente for two UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Georgia and Cyprus in 2023. Since then, he has made 19 appearances for La Roja, scoring 3 goals.
