Bart Verbruggen made several key saves to deny the Swedish attack in tonight’s match.

The Netherlands sealed a thumping 5-1 win over Sweden in a Group F Matchday 2 fixture in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026 on June 20. The Oranje took a big lead due to their in-form strike force, but it was goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen who stood tall to keep the Swedish attackers at bay.

Verbruggen’s heroics neutralised the fearsome pair of Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak. Even Yasin Ayari, who netted a brace in the last game against Tunisia, found his efforts denied by the towering Dutch goalkeeper.

The Brighton man made the first key save in the seventh minute, diving low to tip a powerful effort from Gyokeres behind. He then denied Ayari, who tried to chest down a cross from Gyokeres before trying to pull the trigger.

Despite Sweden going two goals down after a quick brace from Brian Brobbey, the Blagult roared back after the hydration break. Gyokeres found himself with time and space and tried to bend the ball into the top corner, but Verbruggen was alert and parried the danger away.

His best moment came in first-half stoppage time, where he made two brilliant saves in two minutes to deny Ayari. Substitute, Anthony Elanga finally beat the goalkeeper just before the hour mark with a fine finish. Still, Verbruggen’s brilliant performance was key in preventing Sweden from making a comeback in the game.

Born in Zwolle, Verbruggen started his youth career with the N.A.C. Breda academy. Belgian club RSC Anderlecht signed him in 2020 for a fee of 2.30 million euros. He made his senior debut in a Belgian First Division A match against Club Brugge.

The 6-ft-4-in custodian quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, dislodging the erstwhile number 1, Hendrik Van Crombrugge. Under the tutelage of Vincent Kompany, Verbruggen’s profile continued to rise, and he earned a move to English Premier League side Brighton in a deal worth 20M.

He was selected as the starting goalkeeper over Jason Steele and made his debut in July 2023. Since then, he has built his reputation as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe, finishing last season with 38 appearances in the Premier League, during which he kept 10 clean sheets.

Verbruggen made his international debut in 2023 against France. He has won 31 caps in total, with 12 of them ending in clean sheets.
