Qatar rescued a 1-1 draw against Switzerland tonight.
Qatar earned a dramatic 1-1 draw in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener against Switzerland at Levi’s Stadium on June 13. After going down early to a spot kick by Breel Embolo, the Maroons fought back with a stoppage-time equaliser from Boualem Khoukhi.
The match was completely dominated by the Swiss team, with opposition goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada making a couple of key saves to keep his side in the contest. However, a foul by the Abunada on Remo Freuler led to a penalty being awarded to the Nati, which Embolo dispatched into the back of the net.
Just when it seemed like Qatar were destined for their fourth consecutive World Cup defeat, Khoukhi scored in the 94th minute with a towering header from a corner that gave no chance to Gregor Kobel. Their supporters erupted in joy at the full-time whistle as the draw earned the tiny Middle Eastern nation their first-ever point in FIFA’s flagship tournament.
Interestingly, Khoukhi’s goal was only the second ever scored by the Maroons at the tournament. Midfielder Mohammed Muntari scored their first goal in 2022 against Senegal, although the team failed to win any of their three matches in that edition.
Boualem Khoukhi Profile
- Age: 35
- Position: Centre-back
- Club: Al-Sadd
Khoukhi was one of six foreign-born players in his nation’s starting lineup against Switzerland tonight. The defender was born and raised in Algeria and is a product of the JSM Cheraga academy.
He moved to his adopted nation in 2009. After impressing Al-Arabi head coach Uli Stielike at a trial, the defender was offered a contract. After eight years with that team, he moved to Al-Sadd and has since played 141 times for the club.
Khoukhi’s journey in international football is much more interesting. The Gulf country attempted to naturalise him shortly after he moved there, but the Bou Ismail-born defender rejected the approach, claiming that his goal was to represent Algeria in the future.
Despite being a part of Algeria’s U-23 side and Olympic team, he accepted Qatari citizenship to help his domestic side with the foreign player quota. Once he became eligible to represent his new team, he was called up and made his official debut in 2014.
Since then, he has represented his adopted homeland 123 times, scoring 22 goals and registering eight assists. He is his nation’s fifth-most-capped player. Astonishingly, he is also the national team’s ninth-highest goalscorer of all time.
