Rigg is the youngest debutant in Sunderland’s history.

According to sources, Liverpool and Chelsea are considering moves for highly-rated Sunderland youth player Chris Rigg. With four victories in a row and a defeat, Sunderland are currently second in the EFL Championship after an incredible start to the season.

Several major clubs have definitely taken notice of Rigg’s performances. Premier League sides Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea are all considering moves for the young player.

Given that Sunderland are keen to keep him, it is believed that Rigg is willing to wait for the ideal opportunity to present itself.

The midfield player might be crucial to Sunderland’s efforts to return to the Premier League after an eight-year absence.

Who is the highly-rated talent Chris Rigg?

In February 2023, Rigg made his Sunderland debut as a substitute in an FA Cup match against Fulham, making history as the team’s youngest-ever debutant at the age of 15.

Then, in the EFL Cup in August against Crewe Alexandra, Rigg created history as the youngest goalscorer for the Black Cats ever, scoring a goal at the age of 16.

The player who turned 17 this June went on to play in 21 Championship games for Sunderland’s first team last season. He has been a regular this season under new head coach Regis Le Bris.

In all competitions, Rigg has participated in Sunderland’s five games of the 2024–25 season. With four wins in the Championship, the team has risen to the top two of the Championship table with 12 points on board.

Previously this year, Rigg’s future at the Stadium of Light was a subject of discussion. However, in June, he signed his first official deal with Sunderland, tying him to the club through at least 2027.

It’s obvious that Rigg could leave the club for a bigger challenge in the future. If he wants to further solidify his status as a top midfielder in Europe then a big club will be able to help him achieve this.

However, for now, he is young and should continue his time at Sunderland. It will help him get regular game time and also aid in his development rather than joining a big side where he won’t even be a starter, slowing down his progress.
