Ashour’s goal gave the Pharaohs an early lead against Belgium.

African heavyweights Egypt needed just 19 minutes to open their account in the FIFA World Cup 2026 match against Belgium, with Emam Ashour putting the Pharaohs ahead with a powerful effort that flew past Thibaut Courtois.

The seven-time AFCON champions started the match on the front foot, putting pressure on the Belgian backline with rapid counterattacks. Their dominance bore fruit when Ashour broke the deadlock, cutting inside before pulling the trigger from outside the box. The low, powerful strike nestled into the bottom corner, giving Courtois no chance.

The Egyptian frontline of Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, and Ashour continued to trouble the Red Devils, registering two shots on target inside the opening half-hour.

Other than a short spell in Denmark, Ashour has spent his entire career in his home country. A product of the Ghazl El Mahalla youth academy, he moved to domestic giants Zamalek after a season on loan at Haras El Hodoud.

Ashour spent four years at Zemalek, making 77 appearances and scoring 13 goals. After moving to Danish Superliga side Midtjylland and playing in seven matches, he signed for Al Ahly on a five-year contract.

Inheriting the number 22 shirt previously worn by the legendary Mohamed Aboutrika, he settled quickly into life at his new club. He finished last season with eight goal contributions in 19 appearances across all competitions.

He made his international debut in 2021 against Gabon and has earned 30 caps, registering five assists. However, the goal against Belgium marked his first-ever goal for the national team.
