Who is Esteban Andrada? Real Zaragoza's goalkeeper who punched opponent in LaLiga 2 derby match

The goalkeeper has landed himself in huge trouble.

During stoppage time on Sunday, Real Zaragoza’s journey to Huesca swung into a state of chaos.

Three red cards were issued in all, including one to Zaragoza goalkeeper Esteban Andrada, who punched an opponent in the face after being sent off.

Jorge Pulido, a defender for Huesca, was sent to the ground by Andrada’s vicious right hook as he ran by the referee. A Huesca player swiftly seized the keeper and hauled him away from the scene. It had come after Andrada had shoved Pulido, earning him a second yellow card and then a red.

Andrada is currently on loan from Monterrey in Mexico to Zaragoza. The red card was his first since joining the Spanish team and the third of his club career. The former Argentina international will therefore be suspended for his team’s upcoming game. But that looks like the least of his troubles at the moment.

Who is Esteban Andrada?

In order to help put food on the table for the grieving family, he started working on the region’s yearly grape harvest at the age of 14. He laboriously picked the fruit that would eventually produce Mendoza’s renowned Malbec wine.

He played for the local team San Martin while juggling his work, but it didn’t take long for the grape-picker to draw attention with his antics.

After San Martín, Esteban Andrada began his football career at an Argentine club, Lanus, where he played for their youth team before getting promoted to the senior team in 2012. However, after two years, he was sent on a loan to Arsenal de Sarandí, where he played for a year before returning to Lanus. He played there until 2018.

Subsequently, Esteban Andrada earned a move to one of Argentina’s most popular clubs, Boca Juniors, in 2018 and became their first-choice goalkeeper and spent three seasons there before joining Monterrey, a Mexican club.

However, he spent his prime years there playing for them until he was loaned to one of the top sides of the Spanish second division, Real Zaragoza, last year.

So far, his time at the club has been decent as the club is currently fighting in the relegation zone and could be demoted to the third division of the Spanish league this season.

Moreover, his recent controversy will see him miss their next match. But how the goalie has reacted after getting a red card could result in his contract being terminated and being handed a lengthy ban.
