Who is Hazem Mastouri? Tunisia's goalscorer vs Netherlands in FIFA World Cup 2026

The 29-year-old scores for the first time on the world stage.

Tunisia went head-to-head against Netherlands in their third and final group stage fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This contest took place at the Kansas City Stadium.

The Dutch started off the contest with high pressing and were instantly rewarded with a goal in the first three minutes of the game. It was an own goal by Tunisian captain Ellyes Skhiri. This put the pressure early on the Hervé Renard-led side. Just four minutes later, Brian Brobbey doubled the lead for the Netherlands national football team after firing the ball at the back of the net.

The Eagles of Carthage were looking to make a comeback and in the 54th minute, Hazem Mastouri engraved his name on the scoresheet after scoring his first goal in the FIFA World Cup.

Hazem Mastouri was born on June 18, 1997, in Tunis. His physicality made him a natural striker. He began his footballing journey in a modest environment, unlike other players who joined the youth academies of domestic clubs.

Mastouri’s journey in his youth was not an easy one. He had to prove himself in amateur football before attracting attention from professional clubs. He went on to join the southern Tunisia-based club AS Degache in 2016. In their youth system, Hazem Mastouri developed aerial ability, hold-up play and clinical finishing during the close encounters.

After his performances caught the eye, he went on to play for LPS Tozeur in 2020. Soon, he moved to ES Métlaoui in 2021. After spending some at the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 club, Hazem Mastouri joined Al Najaf in Iraq. He was quick to adapt to the league in 2023, but once again, his tenure was short-lived.

He returned to Tunisia in 2024 and joined US Monastir. This also became a career-defining season for him. Mastouri scored 18 goals across all competitions for his club during that campaign and looked like a capable forward on the field.

In August 2025, Dynamo Makhachkala signed Hazem Mastouri and this move to the Russian Premier League became one of the biggest challenges for him.

For the Tunisia national football team, he made his debut in 2024. Mastouri played a crucial role in Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers for his nation.

He is now competing for his nation at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and has scored his first goal at the grandest stage of them all.
