Who is Matheus Cunha? Brazil striker who scored brace vs Haiti in FIFA World Cup 2026

The Brazil national football team are taking on the Haiti national football team in their second group stage fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The clash took place at the Philadelphia Stadium.

The Carlo Ancelotti-led side have tried to control the game from the start, but it has not been enough. The Grenadiers are showing their capabilities of winning the ball back. A Selecao need to maintain better intensity both in the midfield and the attacking front.

Positive signs for the Brazil national football team as they have scored the opening goal of the game. It was Matheus Cunha who tapped the ball in the 23rd minute and completed his brace in the 36th minute to help his side with a 2-0 advantage. This will only boost the confidence of the five-time world champions and things might go south for Haiti now.

Matheus Cunha was born on May 27, 1999, in João Pessoa, in northeastern Brazil. He spent much of his youth days playing futsal (indoor version of football). He developed close control, dribbling ability and creativity while playing the sport.

Cunha then went on to join the youth academy of Cortiba FC, a club widely known in Brazil. His display of talent on the pitch quickly helped him move to Europe. At 18, he signed for Swiss club FC Sion. He scored 10 goals in his debut season. In 2018, the centre-forward went on to join the Bundesliga club, RB Leipzig.

Matheus Cunha then moved to Hertha BSC in 2020. He demanded regular playing time and this also became a turning point in his career. He became more versatile, scoring goals and also started creating chances. Cunha then signed for Atletico Madrid in 2021. Even though his performances with the LaLiga club are not very renowned, he gained quite a good experience under Diego Simeone.

He went to the Premier League after being loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers, before making the transfer permanent in 2023. He had a fantastic season with the club in 2024-25, making his case stronger for a bigger club.

The English giants Manchester United came in to sign Matheus Cunha in June 2025. He has been one of the main men in the squad for the Red Devils and continues to deliver on the big stage.

Cunha starred for the Brazil U-23 side who secured a gold medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics. He made his senior debut for the five-time world champions in 2021. He showed with his performances that he can be crucial for the squad. He is now competing at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
