DR Congo pulled off an upset in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener, earning a 1-1 draw against Portugal in their Group K fixture at NRG Stadium in Houston. Samuel Moutoussamy started for the African nation and played the full 90 minutes, controlling the midfield against a strong Portuguese side.
Joao Neves opened the scoring for the Selecao das Quinas in the sixth minute, and Newcastle United striker Yoane Wissa equalised with the final touch of the first half. While Moutoussamy did not score a goal or register an assist, he was key in dictating the game for the underdogs. He had an 84% pass-completion rate and made two tackles.

Born in Paris to a Congolese mother and an Indo-Guadeloupean father of Tamil origin, Moutoussamy began his career with the youth academy of Meudon AS in 2003. After also spending time with the youth sides of Montrouge FC 92 and Lyon, he moved to Nantes, making his senior debut in 2017.
He made 144 appearances for the Canaries, also spending a year on loan at Dutch side Fortuna Sittard. He moved to Turkish Super Lig side Sivasspor in 2024, and after a season there, he was signed by Greek club Atromitos. He made 35 appearances across all competitions for his new side, scoring three goals, all of which came in the Greek Super League.
The midfielder has deep ties with DR Congo, having visited his mother’s native Kinshasa several times. He changed his international allegiance to the Leopards and made his debut in 2019. Since then, he has earned 59 caps, representing his nation in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
