Who is Zion Suzuki? Japan’s USA-born goalkeeper starring at FIFA World Cup 2026

Zion Suzuki made a big save to deny Donyell Malen in the World Cup opener against Netherlands.
Asian powerhouses Japan made their seventh consecutive World Cup appearance in a feisty Group F clash against the Netherlands at AT&T Stadium on June 14. Facing a spirited Dutch side, the Japanese defence held firm to protect their clean sheet in the opening stages of the game, with young goalkeeper Zion Suzuki starring with an early save.
In just the third minute of the match, Cody Gakpo found the in-form Donyell Malen in front of the opposition area. The Roma forward held off pressure from Shogo Taniguchi before firing a rocket shot. An alert Suzuki got a strong hand on the ball to tip it behind.
The save marked the strong defensive performance seen by the Samurai Blue during the opening half of their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener. Their defence continued to frustrate the Dutch attackers, eventually holding them to a goalless first half.
