Who is Park Seung-soo? 18-year-old South Korean teenager signs for Newcastle United

The youngster will embark on a new chapter of his playing career.

Park Seung-soo, a South Korean winger, has joined Newcastle United from Suwon Bluewings. The 18-year-old has appeared in five games for the South Korea Under-20 team and tallied one goal and three assists in 28 senior appearances for the K League 2 team.

Park’s first team will be the Magpies under-21 group.

“It’s a huge honour to join Newcastle United.” he said. “It’s a big step for me and I feel incredibly thankful for the faith the club have shown in me. I’m excited to develop here, learn from the coaches, and give everything to become the best player I can be.”

Academy director Steve Harper added:

“Park is an exciting young talent with real potential.

“He’s already shown maturity beyond his years in a competitive environment. His signing reflects our commitment to identifying and developing elite talent from across the globe.”

Who is Park Seung-soo?

Park Seung-soo is the most recent well-known youngster to leave the Suwon academy and sign a deal overseas. In June 2024, he made his Bluewings debut in the Round of 16 match against the Pohang Steelers in the Korean Cup.

Park set up Jeon Jin-woo’s (another Suwon talent) and scored the first goal in extra time, just a few months after his seventeenth birthday. However, Pohang equalised at the last second and eliminated the Bluewings on penalties, which was unfortunate for Park and Suwon.

After being suitably impressed, Byun Sung-hwan, the new manager, put the young player on the bench against Seongnam FC four days later. Park became the youngest K League 2 player in history when he entered the game in the 71st minute.

Over the course of the following month, Suwon would break a few more records. At the age of 17 years, 3 months, and 13 days, he became the youngest goal scorer in K League 2 history with his equalising goal against Ansan Greeners.

Park quickly gained popularity among the Suwon supporters. They were enchanted by his energy, perseverance, and developing dribbling abilities right away.

Even at 18, he doesn’t appear to be much older than ten. His celebration was mimicked by the North Stand. His talent at such a young age impressed Newcastle, as they sent scouts to watch the player in action.

Thrilled by his display, they took no time to sign the player and integrate him into their academy for his smooth development. Park has now left Suwon. His exit comes after he played in three Korean Cup games and 25 K League 2 games (6 starts). For his boyhood club, he has contributed three assists and one goal on offence.

Park Seung-soo’s playing style

His ability to dribble is his strength. Park was a conventional number nine before becoming a left-winger. However, he is quick, skilled at deception, capable of outpacing opponents, and has above-average acceleration.

Both his final pass and, possibly, his defensive play need to be strengthened. Park will require patience, as will Newcastle supporters. He is still a very young man who is going to play football in a totally different culture on the other side of the planet.

He will have to adjust to a very new environment and learn English.
