The Gunners sent defending champions packing in the quarterfinals.
Well, who would have guessed Real Madrid would be knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the quarterfinal stage? Very few, indeed. Los Blancos came into the UCL 2024-25 edition as the defending champions. Much like many other clubs, they needed time to get accustomed to the new league phase format.
Anyhow, they managed to reach the quarterfinals. Standing in their way were Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal. The Gunners started their journey by automatically qualifying for the Round of 16. They had finished third in the 36-club league phase table.
It was a monumental achievement in itself. With eight games played, they won six, drew one and lost just once. A 19 points tally allowed them to move to last 16 stage.
Netherlands PSV Eindhoven hosted the first leg of the round of 16 vs Arsenal. Result? A massive 7-1 away win for the Gunners. They knew the second leg was just a formality from there.
A 2-2 second leg result helped them cruise to the quarterfinals 9-3 on aggregate. Everything was fun and chill until they learnt their opponents for the quarters. Guess who? The mighty Real Madrid. The 15th time UCL winners were obviously everyone’s favourite to progress from this tie.
However, Arsenal were magical in the first leg enough to challenge that idea. They thrashed Los Blancos 3-0. In the second leg, even the dominating aura of Santiago Bernabeu couldn’t aid the cause of a comeback for Real Madrid. They lost 2-1 on the night, and 5-1 on aggregate.
Who will Arsenal play in the semifinals?
Well, Arsenal will be taking on Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semifinals. Both teams surely want to go further in the competition. The tie will be intense, nevertheless.
When is the last four tie?
The Gunners will host the first leg at the Emirates stadium on Wednesday, 30 April (12:30 AM IST kickoff). Then after a week, they will travel to Paris, France, to take on PSG. That second leg will be held on 8 May (12:30 AM IST kickoff).
