The famous football award was founded in 1956.
The oldest and most recognisable honour ever given to a professional football player is the Ballon d’Or. Former French football player and pundit Gabriel Hanot created the Ballon d’Or award in 1956. Hanot also co-founded the European Cup, now known as the UEFA Champions League. He was the driving force behind France’s Ligue 1 title.
The first player to win the Ballon d’Or was Stanley Matthews, the best English footballer to ever play for Blackpool Football Club. Alfredo Di Stéfano, one of the greatest football players to play for Real Madrid, won the prize after Matthews.

Nonetheless, the most Ballon d’Or honours are won by Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi, who is followed by the internationally renowned Portuguese football player Cristiano Ronaldo.
Who is the youngest player to win the Ballon d’Or?
Ronaldo Nazario won the Ballon d’Or at the age of just 21 years, 5 months, and 3 days, making him the youngest winner in history.
Nazario is regarded as one of the most technically proficient strikers in competitive football history. His 47 goals in 49 games while playing for Barcelona are only one of the many accomplishments that brought him widespread acclaim.
After a stellar World Cup performance and a transfer from Inter Milan, Ronaldo Nazario won his second Ballon d’Or in 2002 while playing for Real Madrid. Moreover, given his achievements with Brazil, he was given the prize.
Il Fenomeno’s playing career was tragically cut short due to a slew of injuries. Though his legacy endures and he will always be considered one of the greatest strikers of all time, it is mind-blowing to consider the heights he may have reached without some serious injuries in his career.
