Why Barcelona are suffering sudden decline in performance under Hansi Flick?
The Catalan club are just two points above Real Madrid in the league.
Barcelona’s honeymoon phase seems to be coming to an end and now the actual problems are creeping out for the new head coach Hansi Flick. Flick started the term in impressive fashion before things started to fall apart.
Until October Barcelona were nine points ahead of Real Madrid and fast forward to December they are just two points above Los Blancos with their rivals having a game in hand.
This is not new at the club. They usually suffer similar problems. They cannot sustain their impressive performance throughout the season and come under pressure which results in losing points. Now Flick is facing similar issues at the club and he will certainly have to find the solutions before the club fails to catch up with their previous brilliant showing.
However, there are a lot of factors that have contributed to the club’s sudden decline in performance.
Why Barcelona are suffering a drop in their performance?
Following a strong start to the 2024–25 LaLiga season, Barcelona have experienced a rough patch, dropping points against Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo, Las Palmas, and now Real Betis.
It’s difficult to argue that Betis are not worth the money, but that’s a minor concern. In actuality, the Catalans have dropped ten points in those four games and the four of them came from winning situations.
Since the beginning of November 2024, FC Barcelona have lost more points from winning situations than any other team in LaLiga.
There are plenty of reasons why Barcelona are enduring a rough patch and the most significant problem has been the quality of back-up players. The club’s financial woes saw them only sign one player during the summer transfer window. Now those regular starters are barely getting any rest.
Raphinha, Lamine Yamal and Robert Lewandowski, and also the central defensive pair have barely had a break. Barça’s pushing and marking have become much less intense, and they have lost their freshness.
The club have suffered from contentious refereeing calls, some of which were related to VAR, in some of their less compelling games. Lewandowski’s offside goal against Real Sociedad was disallowed, and the VAR footage caused uncertainty.
Lamine Yamal, who played 45 minutes against Las Palmas after missing three weeks, has been absent at the same time as the team’s downturn. Yamal offers imbalance as well as a sense of structure, as seen by Barça’s performances. He coordinates everything, sinks opposing teams, and helps his teammates.
“The team dominates when they lead the score and when they are effective in the area,” Flick said yesterday. But when they fall behind, they have trouble focusing. Above all, Barça are a young team that struggles to bounce back from setbacks.
The former coach of Bayern Munich must now find a way to get them to play better in the league. If he doesn’t, everything will go south and they won’t be able to recover, ultimately costing them the potential LaLiga title.
