Why all Serie A matches have been postponed today? (21 April 2025)

All Serie A matches for today have been postponed.
After Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88, four Serie A games that were scheduled for Easter Monday have been rescheduled. This is until further notice in order to observe a period of sorrow.
On Monday, Torino vs. Udinese, Cagliari vs. Fiorentina, Genoa vs. Lazio, and Parma vs. Juventus were scheduled to be organised.
Before the 2024–25 campaign ends, there are no more weekend spots available. Hence, these will now have to be played in the middle of the week anytime before the season’s last game, which is set for May 25.
On April 21, news broke that the ruler of Vatican City State and head of the Catholic Church had died at the age of 88. As a show of respect for Pope Francis, all sports activities will be postponed, as millions of people in Italy and around the world mourn his passing.
Gabriel Gravina, president of FIGC, stated:
“Italian football shares with emotion the grief of hundreds of millions of people for the painful passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. A great example of Christian charity and dignity in suffering, he always showed himself attentive to the world of sport and to football in particular, which he was passionate about.”
“His human closeness, as well as spiritual, to the sick, the poor and the persecuted across the planet was his deepest testimony, a beacon that will illuminate generations to come. He will remain forever in our hearts as faithful and lovers of the game of football.”
All of the Easter Monday games have been cancelled. Juventus were scheduled to play Parma, Lazio were scheduled to travel to Genoa, Torino were scheduled to host Udinese, and Cagliari were scheduled to play Fiorentina in the first division of Italian football. Along with amateur games, Serie B and C matches have also been postponed.
After Pope John Paul II’s death in 2005, a similar strategy was adopted. The rearranged fixtures do not yet have a defined date. There are five games left each in the season for most Serie A teams.
