Why Vincent Kompany continues to face mixed feedback despite good run as Bayern Munich coach?
Kompany’s appointment as Bavarians’ coach had shocked many.
Ever since becoming head coach of Bayern Munich, Vincent Kompany has faced mixed feedback from the fans despite the club starting the new season under him impressively.
However, the criticism does make sense because Kompany’s managerial credentials were never that convincing that would land him the Bayern job. His time as Burnley’s coach, leading them from the EFL Championship to secure promotion to the Premier League, cemented his status as a new emerging talented manager.
Everything fell apart quickly because the Premier League was challenging to play in. Teams that compete there ought to have all the tools necessary to win games. Kompany’s team lacked these and never gave the impression that they would surprise other clubs in the Premier League.
Burnley performed so poorly that even Kompany couldn’t save them from relegation. It appeared that the former centre-back will have to start from scratch again.
Meanwhile, Bayern were looking for a new manager after Ralf Rangnick turned down their offer to become the head coach. They reinitiated talks with Thomas Tuchel to remain at the job who also subsequently rejected the offer.
With the shortage of managers, Bayern made a bold move to appoint Kompany as their new head coach. The former Belgium manager was quick to accept the job. His life as the new head coach of the club has been excellent. However, the feedback has not been positive from the fans and reporters.
Is Bayern job bigger than Vincent Kompany?
Following Bayern’s 9-2 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb, the former Belgium captain was asked if Bayern’s job was bigger than him. He said:
“I’ll tell you something in a quick way just to prove a point. I was born in Brussels, my dad was a refugee who came from Congo. What are my chances of even playing in the Premier League, winning something as a player, playing for the national team? The odds were 0.000 something. Now I’m a coach.”
“Do you just stop believing in yourself and what you can achieve because of what other people say? The mentality is to keep going and in the end if you fail you fail, if you succeed you succeed. but you can always become better. Online you can always find stuff so I really don’t take it personal.”
Well, this is some motivation there. It’s certainly true that Bayern’s job was always going to be bigger than him, as Kompany’s past managerial records were not persuasive enough to get him a job at the top-level club. When a former player embarks on a coaching career, they usually start from a club where pressure is less. Kompany did that as he managed to take Burnley to the Premier League.
But the English top-flight league was always going to be different compared to the Championship. There the 38-year-old failed to further convince that he was now a talented manager in the making.
However, he also has the ability to start afresh. Kompany has got the Bayern job, and he is not some ordinary manager. We can see Zinedine Zidane, who started his managerial career with the Real Madrid B team before getting the job on the senior team, where he made himself one of the most astute managers.
At Bayern, Kompany has a big chance to show that he is the future. If the German club continue to perform well, then all the critics will certainly start praising his work.
