Austria have been handed a major injury blow ahead of the tournament.
Christoph Baumgartner will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to an injury sustained during the warm-up before Monday night’s friendly between Austria and Tunisia.
On Tuesday morning, the Austrian national team formally announced that their midfielder will not be participating in the competition.
He was ruled out of the event entirely after medical testing revealed that he had a serious muscular injury in his right thigh.

Christoph Baumgartner, who has a right thigh injury, just finished an incredible season with Leipzig, scoring 13 goals and dishing out nine assists in the Bundesliga.
“This is, of course, very bitter news for Christoph and for us as a team. He is an important player and a key figure within our squad. Our full support now goes towards his recovery,” said Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick.
Baumgartner, a standout player in the Bundesliga, would have undoubtedly been Austria’s X-factor for the World Cup in North America.
The loss of the offensive midfielder, who was supposed to be coach Ralf Rangnick’s team’s uncontested creative heartbeat, is devastating for a team that had sincere hopes of going far in the competition.
When Austria’s World Cup campaign begins on June 17 against Jordan, they will now need to find ways to attack without one of their most crucial playmakers.
Austria’s plans would not be drastically changed by Christoph Baumgartner’s absence because they would lose their playmaker. Consequently, the coaching staff will need to reconsider their approach prior to their international competitive debut.
David Alaba injury update
David Alaba is currently dealing with slight muscle tightness in his leg, which forced him to be substituted at halftime during a warm-up match for Austria. However, the issue is deemed precautionary rather than serious, and he is expected to be available for the upcoming World Cup.
