Co-hosts, United States, will open their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a Group D fixture against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, tonight. All eyes will be on American attacker Christian Pulisic, who will be tasked with delivering a positive result for the home team against a spirited Paraguayan side.

USA earned direct entry to the World Cup as the hosting nation and had to prepare for the tournament with a series of warm-up friendlies. However, the results have been concerning for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, which lost to Belgium, Portugal, and Germany this year, with their only win coming against Senegal.

Appearing in front of expectant home supporters against Paraguay will be a daunting task for the Stars and Stripes, and talismanic figures like Pulisic will be key to their hopes of starting the tournament with a win.

With no injury worries troubling him, Pulisic is guaranteed to be one of the first names on Pochettino’s teamsheet. Nicknamed ‘Captain America’, the Pennsylvania native is arguably the most famous American footballer of his generation.

He started all four of his team’s warm-up friendlies and also scored in the win against Senegal, bringing an end to a six-month goal drought. However, his league form has been extremely inconsistent. Despite scoring 10 goals across all competitions for AC Milan this season, he was found wanting in the big moments for the Rossoneri.

For the United States, however, Pulisic has been a reliable performer. With 33 goals in 86 caps, Pulisic can overtake Eric Wynalda’s record of 34 goals to become the fourth-highest all-time scorer in the USA’s history.
