Will Frenkie de Jong play tonight for the Netherlands vs Sweden in FIFA World Cup 2026?

Frenkie de Jong has played an instrumental role for the Oranje over the years.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently underway with the second round of its group stage fixtures, with multiple fixtures creating some of the best historic moments in the tournament’s history. From favourites failing to create a massive impact, while underlooked nations like Cape Verde have cemented their legacy.

In hopes of getting their World Cup hopes back on track, the Netherlands are set to face Sweden in a heavyweight clash against Sweden at Houston Stadium in Texas, USA.

The Netherlands and Sweden are set to battle in the World Cup for only the second time, with their only previous meeting in the competition being in 1974, marking 52 years since the iconic match remembered as a stage that gave birth to the legendary “Cruyff turn”.

Ronald Koeman updates on Frenkie de Jong’s role against Sweden

Manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Frenkie de Jong is not fully fit and remains in doubt to feature in the highly anticipated clash against Sweden, leaving the side at a disadvantage. Doubts regarding his availability arose after the Barcelona midfielder struggled with physical discomfort following a training injury.

“Quinten tripped and this caused an injury for Frenkie. I have already explained quite a lot about his injury.”

“Frenkie also has minor complaints about his physical condition. It is not clear. It is a question mark. I’m not sure, I don’t know. It is below his belly, his injury.”

Frenkie de Jong suffered the injury during the Netherlands’ training sessions on Thursday. He was struck in his abdomen by Quinten Timber as a follow-on sequence, as the midfielder was tripped by Teun Koopmeiners after a collision. He was reportedly hit in a sensitive area located below the abdomen and belly.

While Frenkie de Jong managed to participate in light training sessions with the rest of the squad, he still continues to experience immense physical discomfort. The Netherlands will be affected massively, as midfielder Quiten Timber was completely ruled out of the fixture after the collision. If de Jong is forced out of the game, the Oranje will have to play with minimal midfield depth.

He is currently closely monitored by the team’s medical staff, as they are working tirelessly to ensure his availability against Tunisia in their final group stage fixture. Frenkie de Jong played an essential role as the midfield anchor during his 90-minute appearance against Japan, crucial in maintaining the tempo of the game.

The Netherlands are in Group F of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, dubbed one of the most challenging groups of this edition. They currently trail Sweden in the table, competing alongside Japan and Tunisia.
