Barcelona have been hit with a major injury blow ahead of their game against Valencia tonight. Their star player, Lamine Yamal, has been ruled out with a major injury.

Distractions must be set aside, though, as Hansi Flick’s team look to get back to winning ways after last time out’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

The defending champions defeated Levante and Mallorca in their first two LaLiga games of the season, scoring six goals in total. However, they were given a fright against Levante, needing to rally from a two-goal deficit to win. Yet, Flick’s team were far from their best against Rayo.

With seven points from three games, they are currently in fifth place in the standings, five points behind Real Madrid, who are top of the table with 12 points.

Flick has confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Yamal will not be available this weekend. Moreover, he may also miss Barcelona’s UEFA Champions League trip to Newcastle on Thursday. This follows the announcement by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo on Saturday morning that the 18-year-old had withdrawn from training before the Valencia match.

Barcelona, who have already experienced injury problems in the past week, received the news about Lamine Yamal at a very bad moment. Gavi and Alejandro Balde are both expected to miss due to injury, and their countryman has now also joined the list.

“Lamine goes to the national team with pain, didn’t train, had painkillers to play, they were three goals ahead in every match, and he played 79 and 73 minutes,” Flick said in a news conference Saturday.

“Between the matches he didn’t train. This is not taking care of players. Spain have the best team in the world, in every position they are unbelievably good. I am really sad about this [situation].”
