Although the timing is far from ideal, Santos stated that the choice was made as a precaution. In order to observe the 34-year-old in action, Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti had planned a journey from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo.
Neymar’s upcoming absence caught both the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and Ancelotti off guard, frustrating them after they had hoped to assess the No. 10 closely, according to people close to the CBF and the technical staff of the national team who spoke with Reuters.
Neymar may lose his spot in the national team roster, which will be announced on March 16. This is for the exhibition games against France and Croatia on March 26 and 31, respectively.
With 79 goals in 128 games, Neymar is Brazil’s all-time top scorer. He hasn’t played for his nation since October 2023. That is moreso because of the major knee ligament injury that hindered his recovery.
He has shown glimmers of his former self after returning to his childhood club Santos from Saudi Arabia in January 2025. However, he has still struggled to put it all together in a continuous run of games.
