The Gunners have both their first-choice centre-backs injured.
For the second time in 162 Premier League games, Arsenal’s starting lineup was devoid of either Gabriel Magalhães or William Saliba due to the Frenchman’s injury sustained before the game against Chelsea.
William Saliba, Arsenal’s star centre-back, was missing from the team sheets, which surprised everyone because Gabriel was already out till the end of December due to a thigh injury.
William Saliba injury update
In their absence, Arteta decided to deploy youngster Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié at the back. However, after the game, Arteta allayed any injury fears about Saliba’s absence and said:
“He was uncomfortable yesterday, so we need to explore a little bit more what happened. I don’t think it’s something major, but enough not to be involved in the game”.
Since becoming teammates, Gabriel and William Saliba had only been absent from the Premier League once, during a 2-1 victory at Southampton on the last day of the previous campaign.
Arteta has a rigorous schedule ahead of him, so Saliba’s knock doesn’t come at the best time.
Concerns about injuries go beyond Saliba. Gabriel Magalhães, Arsenal’s leader at the back, is still recovering from a thigh injury he sustained during a friendly match against Senegal in November while playing for Brazil.
