The former Los Blancos player could succeed Carlo Ancelotti next season.
Next summer, Bayer Leverkusen’s current coach Xabi Alonso might leave the club and become Real Madrid’s next manager succeeding Carlo Ancelotti at the helm.
Earlier in 2024, the former midfield player was strongly connected to Liverpool, but he made it plain that he would stay with Bayer Leverkusen.
Alonso’s contract with the Bundesliga defending champions expires in 2026, but according to Sky Germany, Leverkusen anticipates the Spaniard leaving for the Bernabeu at the end of the current campaign.
Manchester City also interested in Xabi Alonso
Since starting his management career, the World Cup winner has established an impeccable reputation. He ended Bayern Munich’s hegemony in Germany by leading his team to an undefeated season. Manchester City are rumoured to have expressed interest in Alonso in the event that Pep Guardiola leaves but it appears that his eyes his set on taking the Los Blancos job.
Ancelotti, the manager of Los Blancos, signed an extension last season, extending his contract until 2026. Prior to then, there had been much conjecture about the Italian’s future; the seasoned coach was even predicted to manage Brazil.
Real have had a more challenging start to this season after winning the Champions League for the fifteenth time, along with LaLiga and the Supercopa de Espana in 2023–2024. After losing to their Catalan rivals 4-0 at home, the Spanish team now trails Barcelona in the league this season.
Following consecutive losses to Barcelona and AC Milan, Florentino Perez and Ancelotti met at the Valdebebas headquarters of the club, reports suggest. Despite the pressure, the board has since chosen to stick with Ancelotti for the time being.
Top European clubs have taken notice of Alonso’s coaching style, and he has frequently been mentioned as Ancelotti’s replacement. He has distinguished himself in the Bundesliga, where his accomplishments at Leverkusen have received widespread recognition, thanks to his tactical approach and superb game reading.
Real Madrid thinks Alonso is the ideal candidate to carry on its winning streak in an effort to uphold its philosophy of excellence.
