Xabi Alonso has had a big impact as head coach at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
Xabi Alonso was regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world when he was playing. After making an initial impression at Real Sociedad, where he grew in their youth squad, he went on to win numerous championships. Those wins came at Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich.
He won the Champions League thrice. Alonso was a member of the ‘golden generation’ of international football players who helped Spain win the 2010 World Cup and two straight European Championship titles in 2008 and 2012. With 114 senior caps overall, he ranks eighth on the men’s national team’s all-time list.
Since taking over as coach in October 2022, Xabi Alonso has achieved significant progress with the Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen, which has recently won their first Bundesliga championship.
His work in Germany instantly sparked rumours that he would take over as Liverpool’s next permanent manager after Jürgen Klopp’s announcement that he will leave at the end of the 2023–2024 season.
Now, Alonso is a strong contender to replace Carlo Ancelotti when the Italian inevitably departs the Santiago Bernabeu. He has been connected to the Real Madrid position.
We examine if Xabi Alonso has what it takes to be a manager at one of the best clubs in the world by looking at his trophy record thus far in his brief tenure.
Alonso began his coaching career in 2018 as a youth coach for Real Madrid, therefore, he hasn’t been in management for very long.
He managed Real Sociedad B, where he played football during his career, after spending a season in Madrid. Before searching for a professional position in June 2022, he spent three seasons there developing his management style.
After a terrible start to the season, Leverkusen needed a new manager, and Alonso came in to support Die Werkself. He led Leverkusen to sixth place in the Bundesliga in 2022–2023 and earned a spot in the Europa League after starting the season with a 4-0 victory against Schalke.
The German team has benefited much from it; on April 14, 2024, with five games remaining in the top-flight season, they won the Bundesliga for the first time. They also won the DFB-Pokal and reached the final of the Europa League, but lost 3-0 to Atalanta.
